Just as it seemed like the Coaching Carousel had slowed down and the media’s eyes were on the Notre Dame playoff saga, up steps Michigan and says “hold my beer.”

At roughly 9:30pm UK time, it was announced that the University of Michigan were firing Head Coach Sherrone Moore with cause for an ‘inappropriate relationship with a staff member’ according to a statement from Michigan’s Athletic Director Warde Manuel.

The Statement from Michigan AD Warde Manuel:

U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.

Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.

Plenty of people took to social media to express a variety of opinions on the matter. Many Michigan fans were understandably frustrated at the situation, with plenty of rival fans seeing the opportunity for a bit of banter. That was until around 12:30am-ish UK time when news broke that the situation regarding Moore has escalated.

Sherrone Moore was detained by police in Saline, Michigan (rougly 9 and a half miles southwest of Ann Arbor. In a statement sent to ESPN, the Saline Police Department said:

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore… Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

It was later confirmed by Pittsfield Police Department that they had responded to a call in relation to an ‘alleged assault’. They described the incident as ‘not random in nature’ and assured the public that there was ‘no ongoing threat to the community.’ The suspect in this case was taken to Washtenaw County Jail, where they have remained since. Given the nature of the allegatons and the events that have transpired, it is not likely we will receive any information unil Friday (12th December) at the earliest. Failing that, it may not be until Monday (15th December),

Moore (39) was has been at Michigan as staff since 2018 and served as acting Head Coach in 2023 during Jim Harbaugh’s self-imposed suspension. He was then hired as the new full-time Head Coach in 2024 following Harbaugh going to the NFL. In his 2 seasons in charge at the Wolverines, he had a regular season record of 16-8 (12-6 in conference) and a Bowl win over Alabama thrown in there too.

Michigan now begins their search for a new man to lead the programme going forward, which may prove a difficult task given the coaching carousel coming to an abrupt halt and is also looking to move on from what has been a turbulent couple of years since winning the National Championship in January 2024.

Fans of Michigan (myself included) now hope that the University can wash its hands of this mess, move forward and progress from here. However, it’s important to remember that given the way the events of tonight have transpired; a police investigation is underway and many details have not been revealed, be careful with what you see and trust on social media. But, more importantly, Sherrone Moore is not the only person involved in this. Moore’s wife and children are caught in the middle and their privacy & dignity should be respected at all times.
